Stratum: Recent Works by Nancy Agati
Tue June 08 to Sat July 31, 2010
InLiquid presents Stratum, an exhibition of recent work by Nancy Agati at The Hall exhibition space in the Crane Arts Building. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Second Thursday, June 10, 2010 from 6 to 9 pm, and an additional reception on Second Thursday, July 8, from 6 to 9 pm.
Stratum represents Philadelphia-based artist Nancy Agati's most recent work, a series of works on paper which incorporate drawing, sculpture, collage, and printmaking. Agati's work responds and engages with nature one step beyond the typical landscape artist. Her work is a true investigation of what can be made from natural forms, and how the generations of these forms change through time and process.
Stratum, of course, refers to one of several layers, levels, or divisions throughout an organized system. This body of work utilizes the repetition of overlapping linear patterns (primarily the leaf structure) to explore graphic, geometrical patterns that correspond to those found in nature. The impetus for this body of work began with the skeletal veins of a small decayed leaf. Through a unique process, Agati creates a new form with printmaking, construction, and a particular handling of the surface. The resulting work has echoes of the natural world and the residual shape of a human made form.
