http://www.niccoviello.com/Working outside, "in the open", feeling the space, and loosing oneself in the in the infinite gestures of light and movement always brings unique rewards. The immediate and direct mediums of brush and pen record a stream of marking responses quite different from the instantaneous and monocular vision of my photographic documentation. The plein air work also marks who I am and how I behave on that day, on that paper or on that canvas. The limitations imposed by site selection, materials to carry, the time available and the weather contribute to the purpose at hand - choosing your challenge for the day and bringing back to the studio a living fragment of that uniquely connected experience.
I want to go back again to paint the experience of that open, public place - not a singular architectural object. The Schuylkill Banks is a place that gets its life pulse from the people who run and sit and bike along the pathways. They populate and animate its map. The challenge I plan to take on when I revisit with painting, drawing and camera is to include the parkland's visitors and in that way add a little drama to an otherwise attractive stage.
