http://www.gallery339.com/Rivers flow through landscapes dense with traces of past human presence. The images here represent a work-in-progress, a project that arose out of an interest in photographing some of the tributaries of the Delaware River in Eastern Pennsylvania. I soon realized that I am drawn to the sites where bridges and other human-made structures are found. These spanning structures exist at points where geology and culture meet - where visually complex spaces emerge out of the conflict and interplay between natural and economic forces.
I've been interested in panoramic photography for quite some time, and this project seemed to present the right moment to begin working with its wider views. The longer format - in this case achieved by stringing together several large-format negatives - allows the photographer to move beyond the confines of the single-point perspective. This makes possible the representation of more complex local topographies - what I like to call impossible landscapes.
